Interest from Thailand for APTEC, Iskandar Malaysia development region
The Asia Pacific Trade & Expo City (APTEC), a development project by Malaysia Pacific Corp Bhd in the special development region of Iskandar Malaysia has attracted interest from Thailand. Touted as one of the largest Trade Exposition Area in Asia, the project combines a year round exhibition hall for everything that is made in Asia. When complete, APTEC will have 2.5 million sq ft of exhibition space in four trade halls, retail malls, hotels (including a 50-storey five-star hotel), as well as offices and commercial units. Visitors to APTEC will be able to source for goods and negotiate with the manufacturer’s representative without having to go to the source. APTEC also combines a resort housing estate called Lakehill Resort. APTEC is developed at a cost of 1.2 billion ringgits.

Premier Shopping Court coming up in Iskandar

Raffles University at Iskandar
Raffles Education Corporation Ltd, one of Asia Pacific's largest education providers is reported to be investing about 200 million ringgit private university in the Iskandar Malaysia region. To be built in cooperation with Education@Iskandar Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Iskandar Investment Bhd, Raffles University Iskandar has an area of 26 hectare and will be built in phases. It is expected to get the relevant approvals by the end of the year. The Raffles Education runs 33 colleges in 31 cities across 11 countries in Asia.

More investment from KFH
Kuwait Finance House Group (KFH) chief executive officer Mohammed Sulaiman Al Omar recently met the PM and indicated that they will invest in a world-renowned university in Medini Iskandar, which is part of the Iskandar Malaysia Project. Not withstanding the present internal audit of KFH, Mr. Sulaiman had strongly indicated that they are positive about increasing their investment in Iskandar Malaysia. Kuwait Finance House Malaysia had previously led a consortium to invest about US$329mil in Medini Iskandar via Medini Central Sdn Bhd in 2008.

The re-make of Majidi Camp
What used to be an army camp situated in the outskirts of Johor Baru city will be transformed into a 12 billion ringgit township with shopping, street malls, hotels and shop lots. The new project is part of the remake of Johor Baru, which is also part of the Iskandar Malaysia Development Project. Tentatively named South Key, the 300 acre township will be built with security in mind. Even back lanes will be put on CCTV coverage and linked to a massive central surveillance with police support. Australia’s Cox Architects have been roped in to design the structures and the whole project is expected to be built in 12 years time, with the first phase of shop lots to be completed by middle of 2010.

Senibong Cove for Iskandar Malaysia
Iskandar Waterfront Sdn Bhd will be building an international class waterfront project in the eastern corridor of Iskandar Malaysia Special Economic Zone. Built on a land with a size of about 84 hectare, Senibong Cove will cost RM 1.7 billion and will also involve Australia’s Walker Corp. It is one of the many new developments in Iskandar and it will be a mainly residential township with a overlooking view of the Straits of Johor. Senibong Cove will also have an integrated marina with 100 berths(with dedicated clubhouse), a 8,000 square metres shopping space and a 3,500-square metre recreation club.

Young Singaporeans see the Iskandar Malayisa project in brighter lights
On a recent organised trip to Iskandar Malaysia led by Singapore’s National Youth Council member Eng Tok Ching, a group of 15 Singaporean entrepreneurs was able to view first hand the potentials of the special economic zone in this southern Malaysian state of Johor. Coming from Singapore, where land is scarce, Mr. Eng commented “it is certainly a very exciting project that we are confident of investing in”. “Given Malaysia’s close relations with Singapore, we feel that entrepreneurs from both countries can benefit from this mega project,”
Given that the Iskandar Malaysia project is a new green enclave covering three times the size of Singapore, the impression the visitors brought back to the Island is that size does make many possibilities viable. For one thing, it started from a clean slate of jungle land where designers can plan for the best, rather than the need to dig up the underground just to build a mass rapid transit, like what they were forced to do in Singapore some years back. Here in Iskandar Malaysia, land is cheap. Homes will cost less and the air is definitely cleaner. But what are the other important factors those foreigners, in particular Singaporeans will stand to benefit if they choose to relocate here?
As Iskandar Malaysia project is built on an economic zone concept, the target is of course on entrepreneurs and investors. But not just any entrepreneur! It is so structured that entrepreneurs who are in the fast growth sector will be welcome the most. It is no more industries that just make product substitutions like textile and consumer products. It is more likely to be industries that use a high content of information technology like bio-medical products, information/communication technology, internet services, bio-pharmaceuticals, new materials sciences, genetics engineering and advance agriculture support industries that can bring about impact to the Asia region. There are boundless opportunities, even for those from the old world economies if only they are willing to embrace new growth industries. The Medini Plan
Millennium Development International (MDI) Malaysia, the developer of Medini Project, has indicated that ground work on infrastructure has begun. Three zones-two Lifestyle and Leisure Zones and the Iskandar Financial District in Medini have been approved by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) and it is anticipated that the project will take about 15 years for completion. The Medini development project sits on a 970ha site and its cost is anticipated to be about US$20bil. Physically wise, Medini is divided into four distinct zones with separate themes: The Lifestyle and Leisure North, Financial District, Medini Central and Lifestyle and Leisure South.

Just 15 % income tax
The Malaysian government has announced special incentives for knowledge workers for Iskandar Malaysia. Workers who belonged to industries in green technology, biotechnology, educational services, healthcare, creative industries, financial advisory, consultancy services, logistic, services and tourism will only have to pay a 15% income tax. However the final details are still been worked out and will be announced soon when they are finalized. The incentive announced in the 2010 budget will be available for knowledge workers who apply for and commence employment in Iskandar between Oct 24, 2009 and Dec 31, 2015, and it is targeted at employees who actually work and reside in the Iskandar Malaysia Project Area.

What to do with Biomass?
Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood was quoted as saying that a biomass policy should be put in place before the completion of biotechnology ecosystem Bio-Xcell project in Iskandar Malaysia, Johor. He was attending the latest BIO International Convention in Chicago. Understandingly, a biomass usage policy will go a long way in ensuring the availability of ample biomass to support biotechnology-based related programs. Malaysia has a large amount of biomass churned from its palm oil industry, but because there is no policy on how the biomass is being used, biotechnology business in the country is being affected. Presently, there are two big users of biomass, namely to be used as burning feedstock or to be used in the production of highly refined sugar. Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood also said the agency was currently in negotiations with at least 10 multinational biotechnology companies, including the three Bio-Xcell prospective investors to serve as anchor tenant for biotechnolgy business in Iskandar Malaysia. In another development, Biocon Limited has signed a memorandum of understandig with Biotechcorp to manufacture Biopharmaceutical products and formulation, within Malaysia's Nusajaya, Iskandar Malaysia, called the Bio-XCell Ecosystem. Bio-xcell is being launched globally at the Chicago BIO International Convention in Chicago.

Johor Tunku Mahkota Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim has indicated that he will organize an international polo tournament next year at the heart of the Iskandar Malaysia Region. The sport had its glorious days during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail, who incidentally is the grandfather of the Tunku Markota. Polo would certainly gain ground as a sport for those who had made it like during the greatest days days of the British Empire. With so much attention being tuned to Iskandar Malaysia, there is a real posibilty that polo sport will be warmly embraced by the those who make Iskandar Malaysia their business address. They were not wrong in calling the sport of polo the plaything of kings.

Pinewood Studios Iskandar Malaysia takes off
According to Nick Smith, Commercial Director, Pinewood Studios Group, construction work for Pinewood Iskandar Studios will begin at the end of 2010. The studio, one of three being built outside Britain, will feature 60,000 sq.ft. of TV studio space and 100,000 sq.ft of film stages. It is speculated that Pinewood Iskandar will concentrate on synergies in the region, specifically on Chinese, Bollywood and other Asian movie and television productions. Smith also stressed that Pinewood will in no position to compete with these regional productions; rather, he sees it as complementary in nature, and perhaps also looking at the renting of facilities and consultancies. Certainly, Pinewood has the brand to go for and it is still too early to see what will finally knock off at Iskandar Malaysia.

Iconic Project
The Malaysian and Singapore prime minister had agreed to the forming of a new development company to develop iconic wellness township in Iskandar Malaysia. Based on the "live work play" concept, the iconoc wellness project will be built on a 200 hectares site with private participation as well. It will also be jointly owned by Temasek Holding of Singapore and Khazanah Holding of Malaysia. The concept was proposed by the Joint Ministerial Committee on Iskandar Malaysia (JMC), which would offer holistic wellness services and facilities. Also announced by both the prime ministers is an Light Rapid System connecting Woodlands in Singapore and Tanjung Puteri in Johor Bahru.

New wings at Educity@Iskandar
Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) has inked a collaborative agreement with two institutions from Netherlands to start talks on a plan to set up a world class Dutch Maritime Institute at EduCity @ Iskandar. The two institutes are Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB) and Maritime Institute de Ruyter (MIR). It is hoped that Educity@Iskandar will be a global player in the educational field. Two others, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed Malaysia) and Raffles University are already setting up their campuses in Iskandar Malaysia. EduCity will host and feature eight faculties, each renowned for their specialisation in medicine, hospitality, engineering, creative multimedia, creative arts and business studies and logistics.

When you think about food manufacturing, think of Iskandar Malaysia Region
There has been a great amount of interest for food processing companies to relocate in Iskandar Malaysia lately. According to Johor State Investment Centre (JSIC) general manager Mohamed Basir Mohamed Sali, companies from as far as Japan is looking at relocating their presence to the Iskandar Region. Also interested are three Singapore-based food-processing companies as they will be investing over RM500mil to set up facilities in Johor in the later part of the year. One of the main attractions of Iskandar Malaysia Region is its strategic locality with easy access to airports, ports and source of raw materials. Food and Agro processing industry is one of the five existing economic activities approved under the Iskandar Malaysia Comprehensive Development Plan.

Let us start with 2000 students
That is the number and a very comfortable one at that. Well, that’s what the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) wanted to do with its branch in Iskandar Malaysia. It is starting its business in the IDR come 2013 and it is putting in an initial amount of S$70 million to start the ball rolling. MDIS is the third university to set its sight in EduCity@Iskandar, Malaysia, joining Newcastle of UK and Raffles also of Singapore. When fully completed, MDIS will have 10,000 by 2023. Realizing that there are presently a total of over 50,000 overseas students in Malaysian, the Iskandar branch will make good business sense. For a start, MDIS will offer Mass Communications, Tourism and Travel and Business Management courses.

New investment for IRDA
Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) chief executive officer Ismail Ibrahim said IRDA have so far received RM4.62bil new investments in the first five months of the year. Investments came from both local and foreign sources and were mostly made in the manufacturing, services and information and communication technology (ICT) sectors. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed had said that 15 companies had indicated that they are looking into investing in the Iskandar Region. This was conveyed to him while he was promoting the regional corridor in the US in May this year. On another matter, Telekom Malaysia announced that it will introduce its broadband services in strategic locations in Malaysia including the special development corridor of Iskandar Malaysia. An accelerated launch will be accorded to Iskandar Region that will be in service by end of 2012.

First Trader’s Hotel for Iskandar Malaysia region
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and Khazanah Nasional Berhad’s subsidiary Themed Attractions and Resorts Sdn Bhd has agreed to jointly operate a Trader’s Hotel in Puteri Harbour, Iskandar, Malaysia Region. The family themed resort marks the first international hotel to be built in Nusajaya. The four-storey 292-room Trader’s Hotel in the waterfront precinct will have a family an indoor theme park, a entertainment centre plus a 100,000-square-foot retail outlets. There are three marinas sited nearby as well. Madhu Rao, the managing director and chief executive officer of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts says that the resort will give an unforgettable and unique experience for families and tourists to the area. Trader’s Hotel, Puteri Harbour is scheduled to be operational by 2012.

High speed Broadband for Iskandar Region
Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), the main last mile service provider in Malaysia will be implementing a state of the art High Speed Broadband (HSBB) for Iskandar Malaysia region. They will be connecting all the four corners of the special development region in the south of Johore including major commercial centers like Nusajaya, Senai and the industrial area of Permas. The special accelerated telecommunication links will cost RM 1.9 billion and will be completed in the next ten years.

Mayor to oversee cleanliness in Iskandar
In a move to improve the development of Iskandar Malaysia Region, the Mayor of Johor Bahru city Mohd Jaffa Awang has been roped in to oversee the cleanliness and beautification of the Southern Development Corridor. As development of Iskandar Malaysia is moving at a fast pace, there is a need to ensure that the development is done with good planning. Security, cleanliness and good landscaping is paramount in making Iskandar Region a good place to work, play and live in.

Warm wind blows across the causeway
Things are going well for Singapore-Malaysia trade. But it could get better. Singapore investment in Malaysia came to about 1.7 billion ringgit for the first four months of 2010. Most of the investment was in the form of manufacturing setups. Bilateral trade grew 36 percent from last year and it hit $52 billion dollars. In an effort to improve on the figures, Malaysia will revive its business council where it will form a place for businessmen to meet and to sort out teething problems. There will also be a special unit to help businessmen from the small and medium sector industries who might want to set up their business in the Iskandar Malaysia development Region in Johor.

Influx of investments into Iskandar from China
Malaysia Pacific Corp Bhd (MPC), the developer of the huge project of Asia Pacific Trade & Expo City (APTEC) and LakeHill Resort City with both located in Iskandar Malaysia Region has managed to rope in construction giant Beijing Construction and Engineering Co Ltd (BCE), one of China’s largest state enterprises as joint partners to develop the projects in South Johor. The investment for both APTEC and Lakehill comes to 6 billion ringgit. In a single move, MPC has gained credibility and strong cash position as a credible developer for the Iskandar Malaysia Region. With BCE in the picture, we can expect an influx of huge investments into Iskandar Region from China.
